Caribbean Stud Poker Guide — Rules, Strategy & Jackpot

Caribbean Stud Poker Complete Guide: Rules, Dealer Qualification, Raise Decisions, Progressive Side Bets and House Edge

Caribbean Stud Poker looks like poker because it uses five-card poker hands, but the player is not competing against other players and there is no bluffing. The player is comparing a five-card hand with the dealer and makes one main decision after seeing their own cards and one dealer upcard: fold or raise.

That single decision creates the strategy layer.

The casino edge comes from several sources: the dealer qualification rule, the required raise size, the way ties are settled, and the payout structure on strong player hands. A separate progressive side bet can add a jackpot layer with completely different mathematics.

For NivaroBet, Caribbean Stud should therefore be modelled as a distinct table-game product. The main wager and any progressive side bet must be separated, dealer qualification must be recorded explicitly and strategy content must be tied to the exact rule set.

The core editorial principle is the same as elsewhere on the site: one table name does not guarantee one paytable or one house edge.

The basic deal

The player places an Ante.

Five cards are dealt to the player and five to the dealer.

The player sees all five personal cards.

The dealer typically exposes one card while the remaining four stay face down.

The player then chooses:

Fold; or
Raise.

Folding loses the Ante.

Raising normally requires an additional wager equal to twice the Ante.

The dealer then reveals the full hand and the game is settled.

The dealer qualification rule

A common Caribbean Stud rule requires the dealer to have:

Ace-King or better.

That means the dealer qualifies with:

A-K-x-x-x high card or better;
any pair;
two pair;
three of a kind;
straight;
flush;
full house;
four of a kind;
straight flush;
royal flush.

A dealer with Ace-Queen high does not qualify under the common rule.

The exact threshold matters enormously.

NivaroBet should never calculate strategy or house edge before confirming it.

What happens when the dealer does not qualify

Under the common structure:

the Ante wins even money;
the Raise pushes.

This is different from beating a qualifying dealer.

The player does not receive the high-hand payout on the Raise when the dealer fails to qualify.

That qualification rule is a large part of the main game's expected value.

A review should show it near the basic rules, not bury it in a long paytable.

What happens when the dealer qualifies

If the dealer qualifies:

player hand higher: Ante wins, Raise pays according to the player's hand;
dealer hand higher: Ante and Raise both lose;
exact tie: both normally push.

The Raise payout commonly depends on hand category.

A Pair or High Card can pay 1:1 on the Raise.

Premium hands can receive larger multipliers.

The exact table should be recorded from the active version.

A common Raise paytable

A conventional table can look approximately like:

Pair or less: 1:1
Two Pair: 2:1
Three of a Kind: 3:1
Straight: 4:1
Flush: 5:1
Full House: 7:1
Four of a Kind: 20:1
Straight Flush: 50:1
Royal Flush: 100:1

Different providers can vary these payouts.

The house edge depends on the actual table.

NivaroBet should not present the example as a universal paytable.

Why the Raise is two units

If the Ante is 10 units, a common Raise is 20 units.

That means the decision is significant.

Folding loses only the 10-unit Ante.

Raising puts another 20 units at risk.

A weak hand can therefore create a much larger expected loss if raised indiscriminately.

This is why "always raise" is a poor strategy under standard rules.

The strategy problem

Unlike blackjack, there is only one player decision after the deal.

But it is not trivial.

The player knows:

the full five-card hand;
one dealer upcard.

The player does not know the dealer's other four cards.

The optimal decision compares the expected value of:

folding and losing one Ante;
versus raising two additional units and playing out the hand.

This is a conditional-probability problem.

Easy Raise decisions

Strong hands are straightforward.

Under conventional rules, the player should generally raise with:

Pair or better.

These hands are strong enough relative to the dealer qualification and comparison distribution.

There is no reason to fold a made pair under standard strategy.

Higher hands are obviously continued.

The difficult decisions are Ace-King and weaker high-card hands.

Easy Fold decisions

Very weak high-card hands are normally folded.

A hand such as:

K-9-7-4-2

has little chance of beating a qualifying dealer and no strong qualification interaction.

The main strategic boundary sits around Ace-King high.

That is where the dealer upcard and player kickers begin to matter.

Ace-King strategy

Traditional Caribbean Stud strategy often uses a detailed decision rule for Ace-King high hands.

The correct decision can depend on:

whether the dealer upcard matches one of the player's cards;
the player's third-highest card;
the player's fourth-highest card;
whether the dealer upcard is Ace or King;
other exact composition details.

This is too nuanced for a one-line universal rule.

NivaroBet should either publish a fully verified strategy chart for the exact standard game or clearly state that Ace-King hands are the marginal decision region.

Why the dealer upcard matters

The visible dealer card removes one card from the unknown deck.

If the dealer upcard matches one of the player's ranks, it can affect the probability of the dealer making a pair.

If the upcard is Ace or King, it also interacts with the dealer's qualification threshold.

This means strategy is not based only on the player's hand.

The same Ace-King player hand can have a different expected value against different dealer upcards.

That makes Caribbean Stud more composition-sensitive than a simple "pair or fold" game.

Five-card poker rankings

The game normally uses standard five-card poker rankings:

Royal Flush
Straight Flush
Four of a Kind
Full House
Flush
Straight
Three of a Kind
Two Pair
One Pair
High Card

Exact Ace-low straight treatment should be confirmed.

A standard A-2-3-4-5 straight is commonly recognised.

Unlike Three Card Poker, Flush ranks above Straight in the conventional five-card hierarchy.

For that contrast, see Three Card Poker complete guide.

Dealer ties

If player and dealer have the same hand category, compare according to normal poker tiebreaking rules.

For pairs:

compare pair rank;
then kickers.

For high-card or flush:

compare highest card;
then next;
continue as needed.

For straights:

compare highest card in the sequence.

An exact tie normally pushes both Ante and Raise.

Provider rules should confirm the settlement.

Dealer qualification with Ace-King

An Ace-King high dealer hand qualifies only if it satisfies the threshold exactly.

The remaining cards determine the full five-card hand but the first two ranks are the key qualification category.

A dealer with A-K-4-3-2 qualifies.

A dealer with A-Q-J-9-7 does not.

This distinction can create results where the player wins the Ante even with a relatively weak hand because the dealer failed to qualify.

Why qualification helps the player

Without qualification, every dealer hand would contest the Raise.

Qualification creates a subset of deals where the player wins the Ante automatically and the Raise is returned.

That improves player return.

The casino edge is then balanced by:

forced two-unit Raise;
strategy difficulty;
payout table;
dealer comparison.

Changing qualification changes the whole model.

Main-game house edge

The house edge is often quoted against the initial Ante.

Because the player sometimes folds and sometimes adds a two-unit Raise, the average total amount wagered per hand is higher than one unit.

Analysts can also quote an element of risk relative to average total action.

These percentages are not directly comparable unless the denominator is clear.

NivaroBet should label:

house edge on Ante;
element of risk on total average wager

as separate metrics.

Why side bets need separate math

Caribbean Stud is famous for progressive jackpot side bets.

The side bet is normally placed before the deal.

It pays according to the player's five-card hand and can award a fixed or progressive prize for premium combinations.

The dealer hand and main Raise decision usually do not determine the side-bet result.

Therefore:

main game strategy cannot improve side-bet odds;
progressive jackpot RTP is separate from the main game.

This separation is essential.

Progressive jackpot structure

A progressive side bet can pay for:

Flush;
Full House;
Four of a Kind;
Straight Flush;
Royal Flush.

The Royal Flush can receive:

100% of jackpot;

or another defined share.

Straight Flush can receive:

fixed amount;
percentage of jackpot;
another prize.

Rules vary by network.

NivaroBet should store the progressive table and current meter separately.

Current jackpot amount is time-sensitive

A progressive meter can change every second.

Evergreen copy should not hard-code "jackpot is £1,250,000" unless the value is live, timestamped and sourced.

The page should instead explain:

seed value;
current observed value;
jackpot share;
eligibility;
side-bet cost.

For the general mechanics, see Progressive jackpot casino games guide.

Side-bet house edge changes with jackpot size

This is an important feature of progressive games.

If the fixed probability of hitting the top hand remains the same while the jackpot amount grows, the expected return of the side bet can increase.

At a sufficiently large jackpot, the theoretical return can approach or exceed certain thresholds.

However, exact calculation requires:

full paytable;
jackpot share;
current jackpot;
side-bet cost;
exact hand probabilities;
any cap or reset rules.

NivaroBet should not publish break-even jackpot numbers without a complete verified model.

Jackpot contribution

Part of the side-bet stake can fund the progressive pool.

That contribution affects:

jackpot growth;
theoretical RTP.

The main Ante-Play wager may not contribute to the jackpot at all.

This is another reason the progressive bet should not be merged into main-game RTP.

A review should show the side-bet amount explicitly.

Live Caribbean Stud

Live dealer versions use physical cards and a studio dealer.

The player has a decision window after seeing the hand and dealer upcard.

Useful review points:

decision timer;
auto-fold behaviour;
side-bet availability;
table limits;
jackpot meter;
rule access;
result history.

The live format does not change the core probabilities if the rules are the same.

The payout table and side-bet network can.

RNG Caribbean Stud

RNG versions deal virtual cards.

The game can move much faster.

The interface should:

display all five player cards clearly;
show dealer upcard;
require an explicit Raise/Fold decision;
expose full paytable;
show progressive rules where present;
record round ID.

NivaroBet should verify the active version rather than copy a live table's rules into the RNG page.

Auto-play risk

Because the Raise/Fold decision changes expected value, automated play needs care.

An autoplay system can:

use a fixed strategy;
always raise;
always fold below pair;
another provider-specific rule.

If the user cannot configure the decision, the strategy should be disclosed.

A poor autoplay rule can materially increase expected loss.

NivaroBet should not assume automation is optimal.

Betting speed

An RNG game can complete far more hands per hour than a live table.

Even with identical house edge, faster play increases turnover.

If the main game averages more than one unit of total action per hand because of Raises, hourly exposure can become substantial.

Add progressive side bets and total turnover rises again.

Expected cost per hour should therefore consider:

Ante;
Raise frequency;
side-bet stake;
hands per hour.

Progressive side-bet budgeting

Suppose:

Ante = 5 units;
Raise when continuing = 10 units;
progressive side bet = 1 unit.

The player pays the 1-unit side bet every hand if enabled.

That cost continues even when the main hand is folded.

A long session can therefore generate significant side-bet turnover.

The jackpot should be treated as an optional product, not part of the mandatory main wager.

Comparing standard and jackpot tables

Two Caribbean Stud tables can have identical main-game rules.

One can add a progressive side bet.

The main-game house edge can therefore be identical while the total session expected loss differs because the player chooses the extra wager.

A casino comparison should not label the jackpot table "worse" if the side bet is optional.

It should show the optional expected-cost layer clearly.

Pair or better strategy is not enough

A common simplified strategy says:

raise Pair or better;
fold below Ace-King;
use a special rule for Ace-King.

That is a useful summary.

But the marginal Ace-King rule matters for optimal play.

A page claiming "optimal strategy" must include the full composition-dependent rule or cite a verified strategy source.

Otherwise, label it "simplified strategy."

NivaroBet should be precise about that distinction.

Why the dealer upcard matching a player rank matters

Suppose the player's Ace-King hand includes a Queen.

If the dealer upcard is Queen, one Queen is removed from the unknown dealer cards.

That can reduce the chance the dealer pairs Queens.

The exact expected-value effect depends on all visible cards.

This is the kind of composition detail that explains why high-card strategy cannot be reduced to one rank threshold.

A full strategy engine would enumerate remaining dealer combinations.

Strategy can be simulated exactly

Because:

the deck is finite;
player hand is known;
dealer upcard is known;
only four dealer cards are unknown;

a program can enumerate every possible dealer completion for a given player state.

For each state:

calculate fold EV;
calculate raise EV;
choose higher.

This can generate an exact strategy table under the specified rules.

NivaroBet can use this approach later for a verified interactive strategy tool.

The tool should not publish results until the rule model passes tests.

Bonus contribution rules

Casino bonuses may give table games reduced wagering contribution.

Caribbean Stud can be excluded or contribute less than slots.

The progressive side bet may also be excluded.

These are promotion rules.

Do not infer them from the game RTP.

NivaroBet should link to Casino bonus terms explained when users need the wagering layer.

Table limits

Ante and progressive side bet can have separate limits.

The Raise is derived from the Ante.

For example:

Ante minimum 1;
Ante maximum 500;
Raise = 2× Ante;
progressive side bet fixed 1.

That creates a maximum total round exposure larger than the displayed Ante maximum.

NivaroBet should calculate total possible exposure in review tools.

Maximum payout

Premium Raise payouts and jackpot prizes can be subject to caps.

A table advertising 100:1 Royal Flush on a large Ante can still impose a maximum win.

Progressive jackpots can have their own network cap.

These limits should be shown.

Do not publish theoretical stake × multiplier values above the actual maximum.

Card dealing procedure

Live versions can use:

continuous shuffle machines;
automatic shufflers;
manual shuffles.

RNG versions use certified software.

A generic strategy guide should not claim practical card counting.

The five-card deal and frequent reshuffle structure are not designed around a persistent exploitable shoe.

Any advantage-play claim would require independent title-specific evidence.

History boards are not strategy tools

Some live tables display recent hands.

A sequence of dealer pairs does not make another pair less likely if the deck is freshly shuffled.

A recent Royal Flush does not make the progressive jackpot "less due" in a new independent deal.

History is descriptive.

It does not replace probability.

NivaroBet should not frame streaks as predictive.

Example: dealer does not qualify

Player:

A-Q-9-7-3.

Dealer:

A-Q-J-8-4.

Dealer does not have Ace-King or a pair.

Under the common rule, dealer fails to qualify.

If the player raised:

Ante wins 1:1;
Raise pushes.

The player's high-card hand does not need to beat the dealer because qualification ends the main comparison.

Example: dealer qualifies and player wins

Player:

9-9-K-8-4.

Dealer:

A-K-Q-J-7.

Dealer qualifies with Ace-King high.

Player has a Pair of Nines and wins.

Under a common paytable:

Ante pays 1:1;
Raise with Pair pays 1:1.

If the Ante was 10 and Raise 20, profit would be 10 + 20 before considering any side bet.

Example: premium Raise payout

Player:

8-8-8-K-4.

Dealer qualifies and loses.

If Three of a Kind pays 3:1 on the Raise:

Ante wins 1:1;
Raise pays 3:1.

A 10-unit Ante creates a 20-unit Raise.

Profit:

Ante: 10;
Raise: 60.

The paytable, not just showdown result, determines the win.

Example: progressive side bet loses while main wins

Player has a Pair.

The main hand can beat the dealer and win Ante-Play.

If the progressive side bet pays only Flush or better, it loses.

Again, one hand can settle multiple wagers differently.

NivaroBet transaction explanations should preserve that separation.

What NivaroBet should never claim

Do not say the game is player-versus-player poker.

Do not ignore dealer qualification.

Do not treat the Raise as optional in amount once the player chooses to continue.

Do not publish one house edge without denominator and strategy assumptions.

Do not merge progressive RTP into the main game automatically.

Do not hard-code live jackpot amounts without timestamping.

Do not call a Pair-or-better simplified rule fully optimal if Ace-King composition rules are omitted.

Do not copy payout tables between providers.

Do not treat recent hands as predictive.

The bottom line

Caribbean Stud Poker is a five-card casino comparison game built around one decision: fold or invest a two-unit Raise after seeing the player hand and one dealer upcard.

Dealer qualification creates the distinctive settlement structure. Premium player hands can receive enhanced Raise payouts. Ace-King high hands form the main strategy boundary.

Progressive side bets add a separate jackpot product with separate mathematics.

For NivaroBet, the strongest page keeps those layers separate and records the exact provider version, qualification, paytable, strategy assumptions, side-bet rules, limits, market and evidence date.
